JOY DIVISION -GRUFTGESAENGE (2 x LP) DR 003-4 Democrazy Records 1981
Matrix numbers: JD 1/2/3/4West-German double LP first released May 1981. Originally on black vinyl this album has been re-released and re-re-released many times on many different colours including black (see list below).
Reissued as Ian Curtis, 15 July 1956 - 18 May 1980 double CD.
Source: live & studio. We have compared the Amsterdam concert tracks on the original album and the reissues and they come from different tapes (or a different generation of the same tape). The sound on the original is more powerful and has more bass. All the reissues sound identical to each other. Almost all the reissues have one less track than the original (see below). As these all came from the same pressing plant it's not unusual for the "wrong" LP to end up in the "wrong" sleeve".
We have been contacted by the original bootlegger who tells us he only produced the first issue of this album. All subsequent re-presses were done by the pressing plant - without his agreement. He told us that none of the reissues have Shadowplay because the master plate had a flaw.
Original LP The original version came in black vinyl with blank labels. The matrix number on the vinyl had hyphens in it.
The sleeve was non-glossy and the front cover had a black stripe along the bottom.
Back cover had a maximum price notice and a dedication to someone called Ertl.Note: Some copies of the original pressing were released in the second cover (the one used for the "first set of re-issues" listing below which doesn't have the max price and Ertl comment). Variation: We have discovered a clear vinyl version which is the same as the first issue in every respect apart from the vinyl colour and the sleeve. It has hyphens in the matrix number and Shadowplay as the last track on side 2 so it is presumably pressed from the same plates.. However, the sleeve is different - it is in the second cover (the one used for the "first set of re-issues" listing below which doesn't have the max price and Ertl comment). The labels are plain white. We believe this version came out in the early 1980s. First set of re-issues (early 1980s) Colour vinyl:
New matrix numbers (without hyphens). Blank labels, LP1 plain white, LP2 plain black.
- Both LPs yellow
- Both LPs blue
- LP1 splattered red, LP2 splattered orange
Glossy/shiny sleeve. Black stripe along the bottom on the front cover, no max price or Ertl note on back cover.
Missing track: these reissues don't have Shadowplay, the last song on Side 2 of Disc 1
There is also an early clear vinyl issue (see "Variation" notice above).Second set of re-issues (1980s) Various vinyl colours, usually different from each other (ie one white & one red LP, one yellow & one red LP, one yellow & one white LP etc), no hyphens in matrix numbers. Printed black on white labels.
Glossy/shiny cover. Black stripe on front cover, max price and Ertl note on back cover.
Missing track: these reissues don't have Shadowplay, the last song on Side 2 of Disc 1Third(?) set of re-issues (1980s) Coloured vinyl, including multicoloured (the most common version has one splattered blue & one splattered yellow LP).
No hyphens in matrix numbers. Printed black on white labels, max price and Ertl note on back cover.
White stripe along the bottom on front cover.
Missing track: these reissues don't have Shadowplay, the last song on Side 2 of Disc 1Fourth(?) reissue Released 2002
