The Electric Circus was
under threat of closure and various Manchester
bands appeared at memorial gigs for the club on the
weekend of October 1st and 2nd.
Warsaw played on the Sunday along with: The Fall,
Buzzcocks, Magazine, Rip Off, John The Postman, John
Cooper-Clarke, The Prefects, The Worst and Manicured
Noise.
Warsaw performed just three songs at the gig and
Virgin recorded the last two, At A Later Date, and
Novelty. There were some technical issues with the
Novelty recording but they released At A Later
Date on Short
Circuit - Live at The Elctric Circus the
following year. This is the only song to have
surfaced to date.
Update May 2021: There are reports
the full version of Novelty, as recorded by Virgin,
exists.
Ian and Bernard had been reading "The Loneliest Man
in The World" a book about Rudolf Hess and his
time as the only prisoner 31G-350125 in Spandau
Prison. Then, after Warsaw, or 31G as it was still
called back then, Bernard shouted "You all forgot
Rudolf Hess!" instead of "We're called Warsaw" as
had been originally planned.
Despite assurances from Virgin that this comment
would be edited out, it appeared on the Short
Circuit album sounding like the introduction to At a
Later Date rather than a reference back to Warsaw /
31G.
