20th August 1978: Royal Standard, Bradford
We're not sure about this gig. The only evidence this gig took
place comes from Rob Gretton's notebooks as published in 1 Top Class Manager (pages
20 and 26) and by Manchester District Music Archives on the
web. However the evidence is quite compelling with a copy of a
contract, a diary entry for a gig on this date, and notes
about petrol expenses.
Joy Division played the Royal Standard a few weeks later on
September 10th
and it's possible this concert was postponed to that date,
or perhaps the September one was brought forward and
actually took place 20th August.
Supported by Emergency (who later became Foreign Press). Or
probably not. According to Emergency's sound engineer Colin
Blades, Joy Division hired him and Emergency's impressive PA
system, as they often did, but Emergency didn't perform. See
the images below which show the same payment of £15 for both
"Emergency" and " PA" in different documents.
